Why does the Hawaiian Fisheman cast out 12 lines?

I read an interested article the other day about an Hawaiian fisherman who goes fishing every morning in order to catch enough fish to feed his family that day.

He gets up early and casts his lines. But he doesn’t just cast one line, oh no, every day he’ll cast 12 lines.

He was talking with a tourist who said to him “You must really like fishing to be here every morning.” The fisherman then replied “No, I hate fishing, but I love to eat.”

The tourist then asked why 12 lines every day and the fisherman explained “Well, if I cast all 12 lines, I know I’ll catch fish.  I never catch 12, but I always catch something.

There’s two very strong lessons there about marketing your business.  The first is that fact that even though the fisherman hated fishing, he knew it taking the regular daily activity was crucial to his family being able to eat.  Apply this to your business.

Whether or not you enjoy marketing, it is crucial to the success of your business and you should be spending some dedicated time every day working on the marketing of your business.

The second is that he casts 12 lines.  He’s not relying upon just 1 or 2 lines in order to feed his family. How many lines are you casting in order to catch your fish?  You shouldn’t just rely on one or two. You need to think and apply at least 12 different marketing methods in order to ensure that you are getting enough enquiries and prospects contacting you each day.  If you can’t think of 12, here’s a starter for you.

Magazine Ads, Newspapers, Google Adwords, Linkedin Ads, Facebook Ads, Twitter, Direct Mail, Google Banners, Blogs, Guest Blogs, Newsletters, Email Marketing and of course Leaflets.

Some of these may or may not be suitable for you, but they’ll give you an idea.  Make sure that you get your fishing lines out there and you’re taking action each and every day.
